It was an exceptionally cheerful day in Stellenbosch and actually has been ever since, after receiving the ecstatic news that American Airlines First Class selected our Aaldering Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot.
The wines will be served as of July 1st 2015 and we feel privileged to now be supplying to 3 of the world’s greatest airlines, which all started with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Asiana Airlines, all three renowned for their high level of wine appreciation on board, and taking Aaldering wines to new heights.
It’s not every day you get recognized by some of the world’s top wine competitions, so we were blushing over receiving a double gold award for our Aaldering Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2010 in Japan’s Sakura Awards.
The jury, over 150 lady wine professionals only, voted it double gold for its unique flavor profile, being a greatly structured wine that speaks to its refined terroir influences in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch. As our Japanese importer Vinos Yamazaki would say upon raising a glass of Aaldering CabMerlot: Kanpai!
We have trotted the world again with the Aaldering Wines team. One of many highlights was the VIP Lenco event, that took place at the Residence of the Dutch Consul General in Hong Kong. This was in celebration of the successful cooperation between the synergetic businesses in Hong Kong and the Netherlands.
Taste buds were spoiled with delights such as the new seasons’ Dutch asparagus, with gastronomy by three renowned Dutch Michelin starred chefs. The top notch menu called for boutique wines and a flight of vife selected Aaldering wines was served and personally presented by Fons Aaldering at the festive dinner. Lenco also hosted a charity auction for the World Cancer Research Fund and impromptu, a lot for staying at the Aaldering Luxury Lodges generously raised a bid of HK$ 40,000.
Also in mainland China our Sales Manager Johnna Zeng had lots of events on the calendar. Both in Guangzhou and Shanghai national wine tastings took place and a larger footprint for top quality wines from South Africa is being created.
As for the goings-on in the Netherlands we were fortunate to participate and donated sponsorship and a stay at the Aaldering Luxury Lodges for the Cure for Cancer gala dinner that was organized and sponsored at Huis ter Duin. A stunning EUR 802.000 was raised for the special cause with the special lot.
Both in Hamburg for the WTCE show and in Chicago during the NRA show, our global marketing and sales manager Janine Smink teamed up with the amazing chefs of Gate Gourmet and Cuisine Solutions. World-top chefs prepared revolutionary dishes that were accompanied by our Estate wines. Lots of new foodie friends were made over a glass of Aaldering wine and we are looking forward to go back to the amazing events and cities for that matter!
We are happy to introduce our new sales lady Lindie Smith to you, the perfect addition to our team.
Lindie is fired with energy and has a well-respected background in international wine trade. “I am excited to be the newest member of the Aaldering family and to make a contribution to further establish the sales on the African continent as well as in South Africa”.
Lindie got to kick off with the Juliet Cullinan wine show in Johannesburg where the wines were received well by the local trade clients.
Top quality investment still continues as our winemaker Guillaume Nell is looking for the essentials of vineyard and winemaking innovation on the Aaldering Estate. “At the start of the season we invested heavily in our vineyards to increase the quality of our wines. To produce world-class wines we have to focus on precision viticulture, such as the moisture probes to monitor and irrigate accurately and the satellite imagery to have an in-depth understanding of the status of our vines and increase their health in every possible way. Soil analyses were done in all the vineyards to rectify any shortages of nutrients and to make sure all vines have the best possible chance to produce high quality grapes. We sowed Lupine between the vineyards to bind nitrogen in the soil for the vines to access during their growing season and to improve the health of our vines. The 2015 crop was lowered to give them a chance to improve their ability to produce even better grapes during the 2016 harvest.
The wines in the cellar shows lots of promise and colour and aromatic profiles are exceptional. Our Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay vines are entering a stage of their lives now where fuller, more complex wines will come to light. Our barrel regime is also getting attention to make sure each individual barrel is carefully selected to bring out the best in every wine. The focus is on creating wines that has a sense of place to ensure Aaldering Wines will always have a strong identity and get recognised by our esteemed followers.
2015 was a great vintage for us and definitely the start of wonderful things to come. The wines in the cellar looks very promising and should be one of our best vintages up to date.’’

In the Netherlands a new wine experience is now being realized at the Staverden Castle. The fine dining restaurant is situated in the Orangery amidst the beautiful castle gardens. The owners grow a large variety of their ingredients in the glass house, of which you have a magnificent view from the spacious terrace. The restaurant has all Aaldering wines available and also offer an exclusive Aaldering-by-the-glass menu.
In the castle itself they will soon be opening a special wine bar, a must-go-to place for wine lovers who want to enjoy a glass of wine in the same natural serenity as you would on the Aaldering Estate.
Or even better, with a double Magnum! Aaldering has released the memorable 2012 Pinotage vintage both in Magnum and Double Magnum.
Memorable for being the first vintage of the wine produced in our brand new cellar back then, with the fantastic quality of grapes that the vintage offered.
