Aaldering Pinotage 2009

The Pinotage from Aaldering Vineyards & Wines has a distinct flavor infusion of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, raspberry, liquorice, and a touch of vanilla. Full body, ripe tannins and a pleasant smoky palate. This Pinotage has excellent maturation potential. The Aaldering Pinotage can be considered one of the best South African wines currently available.

The scoop on Pinotage
Pinotage is all about a blue grape crossing initiated in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold between the two grapes Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Back in 1925 the Cinsault was referred to as Hermitage in South Africa, hence Pinotage. Pinotage is viewed as the signature varietal wine from South Africa. Common features in Pinotage are fruity characteristics like cherries and strawberries. Next to that the wine often gives way to pleasant smoky and earthy tones. Pinotage is often blended with other wines to bring a fruity character to those wines and in South Africa it also has a big share in fortified and sparkling red wines.

The Pinotage grape matures very early and is very sensitive. To make a good single varietal Pinotage takes a very skilled winemaker. Luckily at Aaldering Vineyards & Wines they can vouch for that.

Did you know that Pinotage
Is a required component in the well-known "Cape blends"? The share of Pinotage in this popular local wine requires to run between 30-70%. Pinotage single varietals and blends can be found in the full range of wine styles and cover everything from easy-drinking quaffing wine to a super premium refined barrel-aged wine which can age for decades.
